Morgins sleeps zzzzzzzz

Well after really long and snowy winter the village has been taking a long earned rest from the frenetic ski season. Almost all the snow has gone from the village and the white peaks look beautiful against the green and flowering meadows.

From tomorrow things are about to change. The lift re-opens for mountain-bikers and walkers and the Inalpe takes place where the cows make their way up the mountain to graze for the Summer after being down in the valley all Winter. To celebrate the old They farm will host the traditional cow fight, where the famous Hérens cow compete with each other to establish the herd’s hierarchy.
Food available on site: raclette, barbecue, meringues and home made tarts and there is music and crafts to admire

If you are looking for something a little more exciting then come the week-end after to watch the IXS Swiss national Downhill Cup that will use the fast and technical downhill course into Morgins. It really exciting to watch as these guys really know how to ride a bike at ridiculous speeds on near vertical trails .Starts Saturday 2nd of June

Hope to see you in Morgins soon !

Stranded skier near Morgins

I left Morgins this morning by car to ski over in Chatel after fresh snow had fallen over night.People this week had told me how amazing the conditions are at the moment and they weren’t wrong. The temperatures have dropped and we have had snow almost every day this week making the conditions near perfect – incredible for the penultimate day in this very snowy season.

BUT the day was almost spoilt when I witnessed a dramatic rescue attemt by the French mountain rescue helicopter from Annecy- the nearest chopper with a winch. Two Brits, one of which I knew personally, had got into difficulty skiing a very steep off piste face.I watched while his wife passed on instructions from the pisteur by mobile phone, telling him not to move in case he set off an avalanche. After an hour and a half of just standing there, literally frozen, the chopper arrived, but so did the strong winds and it couldn’t risk winching the stranded skier. In the end he skied down safely but at times it didn’t look good.It just makes me think how much we can take our own safety for granted and how dangerous the mountain can be – even this late in the season. You might not see it,but on the photo, there is a little black dot a skier, motionless not knowing what to do next

Morgins slopes in perfect condition

View of the Corbeau from La Foilleuse lift in Morgins

Skied the Corbeau side of Morgins yesterday in temperatures of  minus 15 after 24 hours of fresh snowfall on perfectly groomed pistes- probably the best on piste ski conditions I can ever remember. This area is great for cruising with wide empty pistes  and an amazing  red piste  into La Chapelle ending with a great  restaurant at the bottom. The good news is the snow condition will remain perfect as temperatures stay extremely low for the next few days.
